Charles Palache, son of James and Helen (Whitney) Palache was born in San Francisco, California, on July 18, 1869. He received a B.S. (1891) and a Ph.D. (1894) from the University of California at Berkeley. He joined the Harvard faculty in 1896 as an instructor in mineralogy and was promoted to assistant professor in 1902 and to professor in 1910.
